PROJECT VISION
Designer Lizzie McGraw commissioned this project for her client’s private residence in Encino, CA, envisioning a unique, hand-painted approach for the vanity room. Rather than traditional wallpaper, the client wanted the lyrics of (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais by The Clash to be intricately woven into the walls with a handwritten feel. The goal was to create an immersive experience—where the words wouldn’t be immediately recognizable, but would gradually reveal themselves to guests as they spent time in the space.
CREATIVE APPROACH
For this project, I handwrote and handpainted the lyrics in my own calligraphic style, ensuring an organic and fluid composition that felt both personal and intentional. I carefully mapped out the spacing, allowing the words to seamlessly flow from one wall to the next without abrupt breaks, so the song remained continuous and immersive. This approach transformed the vanity room into a space where guests could slowly uncover the lyrics, experiencing the text as a hidden narrative woven into the environment.
